Artist's Statement
Trauma is a nearly universal experience, often stemming from distressing events that leave lasting impressions on our minds that reach beyond the individual. As a child, my brain instinctively sought to protect me from the trauma I’d endured, but in doing so, it also disrupted my perception of social interactions and emotional responsibility. As I grew older, I began to realize that the thoughts and ideas churning in my mind were rooted in trauma responses. I continuously challenge this internal programming and its long-lasting impacts through my work. Due to how long it truly takes me to heal, the time-oriented and labor-intensive nature of the printmaking process allows me to feel connected to the artwork while slowly pushing through my experiences. Utilizing imagery of insects and their environment, mixing it with imagery of biology, and using materials such as vinyl help illustrate the struggles I’ve faced and how I’ve overcome them; I create empathy and recognition among those who may have experienced similar hardships, often inviting viewers to engage with these themes personally.
