Halstead. 1980. Historical marker in Riverside Park. / Plaque reads: "Riverside Park Site of the Harvey County Old Settlers Picnic First picnic held here in 1896 The Harvey County Old Settlers Picnic Association was formed in 1888 The first few picnics were held in the John Pierce Grove, one half mile east of here. Some of the scenes in the Columbia Motion Picture "Picnic" were filmed here in 1956."
