Abstract

The cyclical perpetuation of patriarchal ideals within Renaissance Florence reveals the consistent suppression of femininity throughout history. Through the displacement of feminine imagery coupled with the increase of hypermasculinization and phallic imagery, the intricacies of gender dynamics expose their trivial nature and execution. Although the primary perpetrators remain up for debate, religious culture sought to not only silence feminine individuals but to control them indefinitely. As such, the art produced during the rise of the Florentine Republic displays the rejection of femininity and the endorsement of masculine depictions of values. Mary Garrard’s assessment of gender dynamics in Renaissance Florence aligns with her previous research, both in content and quality.
