Dr. Raymond L. Welty was born in Hill City, Kansas in 1894. He received his Ph.D. in History from Iowa University. Dr. Welty was employed at Fort Hays State College in 1936, and while here he taught U.S. History, American Diplomatic History, and English History. He specialized in Western U.S. History and Military History and was referred to by some as the “Keeper of the Archives of Old Fort Hays” because he kept a running and authentic account of everything that happened one hundred years ago at the Fort. Dr. Welty was known to give his military stories a human touch. Historians recognized him as being an authority on the life at Old Fort Hays, and he was highly regarded by his students and neighbors. Dr. Welty died May 23, 1968.
